Jonathan Barnhart, Music
Director and Conductor of the Dedham Choral Society,
received the M.Mus. degree from New England Conservatory of Music
and B.A. with honors from Dickinson College. He has studied
choral conducting with Lorna Cooke deVaron, organ with James
David Christie, and voice with Susan Clickner and Grace Hunter.
As a vocal soloist he has appeared with numerous organizations
including Alea III, Boston Camerata, Cantata Singers, Ensemble
Abendmusik, Musica Viva, and the Handel and Haydn Society, in
repertory ranging from Monteverdi to Schoenberg, performing under
the baton of such internationally renowned conductors as
Christopher Hogwood, Roger Norrington and Andrew Parrott.
Mr. Barnhart is Organist and Choir Director of Congregation
Mishkan Tefila, Chestnut Hill, and of First Parish,
Unitarian-Universalist in Harvard Square, Cambridge, and a member
of the vocal faculties of New England Conservatory Extension
Division and Boston College. Professional affiliations include
the American Guild of Organists, the American Choral Directors
Association, the National Association of Teachers of Singing and
the American Guild of Musical Artists, for which he has served on
both regional and national boards.
Mr. Barnhart's editions of choral and organ music by Mozart,
Vaughan Williams and Thompson are published by ECS Publishing,
Galaxy Music, and Thorpe Music. In 1997, Thorpe Music will
release his Festival Choruses of J. S. Bach series and Hail Thee,
O Music by Aleksandr Skryabin. He has written articles for The
American Organist, and his editions have been favorably reviewed
in numerous publications, including The Choral Journal, The
American Organist and Diapason.
In 1995 Mr. Barnhart was appointed as Music Director and
Conductor of the Dedham Choral Society, after having served as
Interim Conductor for the preparation of Beethoven's
Symphony No. 9 with the Longwood Symphony
Orchestra, the performance of which earned the chorus
critical acclaim.
